Australia Nyrstar Port Pirie Transformation Project

THE BACKGROUND

Develop a polymetallic processing and recovery facility.

Nrstar has reached a binding agreement with Australian Government to invest ca. AUD 514 million to redevelop the Port Pirie smelter into an advanced polymetallic processing and recovery facility. The Nyrstar Port Pirie facility will be redeveloped into a central operation to support Nyrstar’s expanding industrial footprint which will assist strengthen and further diversify Nyrstar Group earnings. 


THE COATING APPLICATOR


The external and internal coating application for project spools was applied by Yulong Tyhoo Pipe Coating Co., Ltd, a Tyhoo Company, who engages in performing internal and external coating for all types of transportation line pipes, pipe spools, fittings and OCTG, etc.

Yulong Tyhoo reserves two internal and external pipe coating production lines,which are able to provide customers various types of pipe internal and external coatings including 3PE/3PP/FBE/2FBE/3FBE/internal lining/internal epoxy/internal FBE/internal lined rubber/internal lined HDPE/inernal lined cement etc.

As the company’s core competitive technology, Yulong Tyhoo owns the only post-curing large diameter line pipe internal primed FBE coating production line in China.The internal FBE coating production line has a design capacity of 800,000 square meters per year, applicable for pipe diameter ranges from 60.3mm to 1219mm. Besides, the company also provides internal FBE coating for pipe spools and fitting of different kinds with dedicated application equipment.

Yulong Tyhoo’s internal FBE coating production line adopts Sucking Oven Posted-curing System with liquid phenolic epoxy primer (or other type of liquid primer) with fusion bonded epoxy coating, with heating cleaning oven to remove any oil, grease or oxide contamination on pipe surface and continuous long-time high temperature post curing to ensure the internal FBE coating’s adhesion strength, compactness, anti-heavy-corrosion ability, anti-abrasion ability and other key mechanical and chemical resistance ability. Yulong Tyhoo’s internal FBE coating system is applicable to be used for transporting sea water, desalinated sea water, pulp, crude oil, raw natural gas and other corrosive medium. The coating has much higher cost performance compared with internal rubber liner, internal high density polyethylene liner or injection of liquid epoxy coating.


THE CHALLENGE

Anti-corrosion coating for different shape and size spools

Customer has requested using internal primed FBE coating as internal anti-corrosion protection for project skid pipes/spools due to the critically corrosion impact from sea water. Unlike most transportation pipelines with straight pipes and bevel ends to be welded during installation, all pipes/spools of the project are to be connected with coupling. All pipes/spools are prefabricated by welding with bends or fittings prior to coating application.

The different shape and size of project spools has largely increased the difficulties during internal and external blasting, coating application and inspection operations. Anti-corrosion coating are also required for all pipe/spool/fitting ends, edges and grooves so as to aviod any direct exposure of steel surface in seawater.


PROPER PACKING PROTECTION

After final curing of coating and prior to releasing, each spool are fully wrapped with felt cloth to protect external coating from impact damaging druing transportation. Then each spool is applied with at least three cotton ropes for protection. In order to protect the coating on flanges, plain ends, grooves etc. each spool end is firmly covered by a Silicone rubber.
